Salt Lake County is the most populous county in Utah, home to the state capital and a substantial portion of the state’s court activity. Its court system spans multiple tiers, from the 3rd District Court — a general jurisdiction trial court handling civil, criminal, and family matters — down to numerous municipal justice courts serving individual cities across the county. Records generated at every level of this system document legal proceedings and serve as the official account of case outcomes, filings, and judicial orders.

Locating court case information in Utah can be done through several channels. The Utah State Courts website provides tools and guidance that cover courts statewide. UtahCourts.us is one aggregator of publicly available case data, though for the most authoritative and up-to-date information, requesters should rely on official state and county sources. Records may be accessed through clerk offices at each courthouse, public-access terminals available at most district court locations, and online tools maintained by the Utah Administrative Office of the Courts.

How to Look Up a Court Case in Salt Lake County?

Several official platforms make it possible to search Salt Lake County court cases from outside the courthouse.

Xchange — Utah Courts Public Case Search

The primary online repository for district and justice court case information in Utah is Xchange, operated by the Utah State Courts. Xchange draws from CORIS, the statewide case management system, and covers cases filed in Salt Lake County’s 3rd District Court and the county’s various justice courts. The system displays party names, party addresses when available, assigned judges, attorneys of record, documents filed, hearing dates, judgments, and case outcomes. Public district court documents filed electronically since July 1, 2010 are available for purchase through Xchange.

Access to Xchange requires a paid subscription:

  • Initial account setup fee: $25.00
  • Monthly subscription: $40.00 for up to 500 searches

For detailed subscription information, visit the Xchange subscription and fees page. Note that sealed records, expunged cases, adoption proceedings, civil commitments, and juvenile delinquency/child welfare cases are not displayed on Xchange.

MyCase — Access for Case Parties

Individuals who are a party to a case can use MyCase, a free online portal that allows parties to view their own case history, review filings, make payments, and access Small Claims online dispute resolution. MyCase requires an email address, a case number, and a government-issued ID to set up an account.

Other Online Search Tools

  • The Utah Court Records platform provides statewide access to case information and weekly case reports.
  • The Salt Lake County District Attorney’s How to Find a Case resource provides guidance for locating both county and statewide case records.
  • Utah State Archives court records guides provide access to historical judicial records, with older records indexed and available online.

In-Person Searches

Public terminals are available at most district court locations within Salt Lake County. Visitors may conduct searches through the CORIS system at no charge and request copies from clerk staff. A government-issued photo ID may be required when requesting restricted or private documents.

Requesting Copies

Certified copies of court records cost $4.00 per document plus $0.50 per page. Exemplified copies are $6.00 per document plus $0.50 per page. Court transcripts cost $6.00 per page for initial certified copies. These fees are set under Utah Code § 78A-2-301.

Are Court Records Public in Salt Lake County?

Utah’s framework for court record access is governed by two overlapping authorities: the Government Records Access and Management Act (GRAMA) and the Utah Rules of Judicial Administration, particularly Rule 4-202.02, which classifies court records into four categories.

Public Records

Most justice court, district court, and appellate records are public. Anyone can inspect and copy them.

Private Records

Some records are accessible only to the parties in the case, their attorneys, and a limited number of other authorized individuals. Examples of private records include:

  • Petitions for divorce and separate maintenance
  • Requests for protective orders
  • Petitions for guardianship of an adult
  • Motions to waive fees or divorce waiting periods
  • Motions for temporary orders in child custody cases
  • Victim impact statements
  • Medical records filed with the court

Sealed Records

Sealed records are the most restricted category. Even the existence of the case is not publicly available. A court order is required to unseal them. Sealed records include adoption proceedings and expunged criminal cases.

Protected Records

Protected records include attorney work product, attorney-client privilege materials, court security plans, and certain confidential business records.

Juvenile Court Records

Juvenile court records — covering delinquency, child welfare, and termination of parental rights — are not public. Access follows a tiered structure under Rule 4-202.03 and is limited to the subject of the record, parents or guardians, legal representatives, authorized governmental entities, and others by court order.

Mixed Cases

In cases involving divorce, custody, guardianship, conservatorship, protective orders, and stalking injunctions, the initial pleadings are private, but court orders and judgment entries remain public.

Redaction Requirements

Filers are responsible for omitting or redacting non-public information before submitting documents. Non-public information includes Social Security numbers (substitute: last four digits), driver’s license numbers, financial account numbers, a child’s full name and date of birth (substitute: initials), and contact information for non-parties. Court staff will not perform redactions on behalf of filers under Rule 4-202.09.

Criminal matters in Salt Lake County are heard in different courts depending on the severity of the offense. The 3rd District Court handles all felony cases and Class A misdemeanors. Class B and C misdemeanors, infractions, and traffic violations are handled in the county’s justice courts.

Salt Lake County Family Court Records

Utah’s District Court has general jurisdiction over family law matters. In Salt Lake County, the 3rd District Court handles all divorce, child custody, child support, adoption, domestic violence protective orders, paternity, spousal support, and guardianship and conservatorship cases.

Access to family court records is more restricted than for standard civil or criminal matters. Under Rule 4-202.02, many core family law pleadings — including divorce petitions, custody motions, and protective order requests — are classified as private records. However, the judgments, decrees, and orders entered in these cases remain public documents.

The Utah Courts Self-Help Center for Families and Children provides forms, procedural guides, and information for individuals navigating family court without an attorney. The Utah Court Records platform can be used for statewide family court case searches where case information is publicly available.

Safeguarding Contact Information

Parties in protective order cases, stalking injunctions, parentage orders, custody orders, and support orders may request that their residential address, phone number, and email be safeguarded from the opposing party. This protection does not apply to court staff or governmental agencies that may need the information for service or enforcement purposes.

Marriage and divorce records in Salt Lake County are maintained by the Salt Lake County Vital Records offices, which issue abstracts of marriage and divorce records. For certified marriage and divorce records at the state level, the Utah Office of Vital Records and Statistics is the primary repository. Vital records are protected, private information accessible only to the person listed on the record and their immediate family members. Those with other legal needs must demonstrate legal proof of eligibility.

Vital records become public after a set period: birth certificates after 100 years, and death certificates after 50 years. Historic records can be found at Salt Lake County Archives.

For divorce records specifically, the Utah State Archives Research Guide for Divorce Records provides guidance on locating older records.
