Davis County, located in north-central Utah between Salt Lake and Weber Counties, is home to a multilayered court system that generates a significant volume of judicial records each year. Whether you need to look up an active case, pull a criminal court file, obtain a divorce decree, or verify a probate matter, understanding how Davis County’s courts organize and release records will save considerable time. This guide walks through every practical step — from online case lookups to in-person requests at the courthouse — and identifies the offices, fees, statutes, and databases relevant to each record type.
How to Look Up a Court Case in Davis County?
Utah’s state judiciary maintains a centralized electronic case-management system known as CORIS (Court Information System), and the public-facing portal for that system is Xchange. Court records from across the state, including those filed in Davis County’s district and justice courts, can be searched through this tool. Beyond Xchange, case information is accessible through clerk offices, public-access terminals at courthouses, and the state courts website at UtahCourts.us, which serves as a starting point for locating publicly available case data, court directories, forms, and self-help resources.
Xchange search options and fees:
| Account Type | Initial Fee | Per Search | Per Document |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-Time Use | $10.00 (credited toward searches) | $0.35 | $1.00 |
| Guest | $10.00 (unused credits forfeited) | $0.35 | $1.00 |
| Monthly Subscription | $25.00 setup + $40.00/month | First 500 free; then $0.35 | $1.00 |
To use Xchange, visit the login page, select a one-time, guest, or subscription account, and search by party name or case number. The database displays party names, addresses (when available), assigned judges, attorneys of record, filed documents, hearing dates, judgments, and case outcomes. Public documents filed electronically in district court cases since July 1, 2010 are also available for purchase through Xchange. Fee schedules are governed by Rule of Judicial Administration 4-202.08.
Individuals who are parties to a case may prefer MyCourtCase, which allows them to view their own case history, access filed documents, pay fines, and check scheduled hearings — all without a subscription fee.
In-person lookups can be done at any of the three Second District Court locations in Davis County. Public-access computer terminals are available at most district court buildings during regular business hours. Court staff can assist with locating files and certified copies.

Are Court Records Public in Davis County?
The default rule in Utah is that court records are open to the public. Rule of Judicial Administration 4-202.02 establishes the classification framework for all justice, district, and appellate court records. Anyone may view and copy public records either at the courthouse or through Xchange. The Utah Government Records Access and Management Act (GRAMA) further governs access to government records statewide, including those maintained by the Davis County Clerk’s office.
Records fall into several classifications that determine who may access them:
Public records — open to everyone — include most case filings, dockets, judgments, orders, and decrees. The case history with minute entries of public hearings and court orders remains publicly accessible unless a judge orders otherwise.
Private records are viewable only by the parties, their attorneys, and certain other authorized individuals. Examples include petitions for divorce, motions to waive fees, requests for protective orders, guardianship petitions for adults, victim impact statements, and medical records. Under an April 2012 amendment to Rule 4-202.02, pleadings in divorce, custody and support, conservatorship, guardianship, cohabitant abuse, paternity, civil stalking, and related domestic actions are classified as private, even though the orders and judgments in those cases generally remain public.
Sealed records — such as adoption files and expunged criminal cases — are not publicly available. Even the existence of a sealed case is withheld. Access requires a court petition to unseal.
Protected records cover attorney work product, attorney-client privileged materials, court security plans, and certain confidential business records. A full list appears in Rule 4-202.02(5).
Juvenile court records are not public. They are divided into social records and legal records, each with its own list of authorized recipients under Rule of Judicial Administration 4-202.03.
Filers bear responsibility for redacting non-public information — Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, bank account numbers, children’s names and dates of birth, and contact information of non-parties — from any document they submit to the court. Rule 4-202.09(10) places this obligation squarely on the person filing, not on court staff.
For general county government records (not court files), Davis County accepts GRAMA requests through its online records request portal. The Davis County Clerk’s office also processes requests at:

Davis County Civil Court Records
Civil litigation in Davis County — contract disputes, debt collection, personal injury suits, writs, and other general civil matters — is filed in the Second District Court. Small claims cases, since 2009, are filed exclusively in justice courts.
How to obtain civil court records:
- Online: Search Xchange by party name or case number. Public documents filed electronically in district court since July 2010 can be viewed and purchased for $1.00 per document.
- In person: Visit any of the three Second District Court locations in Bountiful, Farmington, or Layton. Present a valid government-issued ID and request copies from the court clerk. Copy fees are set by Rule 4-202.08.
- Federal civil cases: For lawsuits filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah, use PACER, which has maintained electronic records for Utah federal cases since approximately 1992.
Historical civil case indexes from Davis County dating back to 1896 are maintained by the Utah Division of Archives and Records Service. These archived records can be useful for genealogical research or locating older judgments.
The Second District Court also offers a CD Request Form for obtaining copies of court proceedings in audio format. This form is specific to the Second District and should be submitted to the court location where the hearing took place.
For parties involved in their own civil case, MyCourtCase provides free access to filed documents, the case docket, and upcoming hearing dates without needing an Xchange subscription.
Davis County Family Court Records
The Second District Court exercises jurisdiction over family law matters in Davis County. These proceedings include divorce and annulment, child custody and parent-time, child support, paternity establishment, guardianship of minors, cohabitant abuse protective orders, civil stalking injunctions, adoption, termination of parental rights, and temporary separation actions.
Privacy considerations for family records
Many family law filings are classified as private under Rule 4-202.02(3). Petitions for divorce, custody motions, protective order requests, and guardianship petitions are accessible only to the parties, their attorneys, and other authorized individuals. Court orders and judgments in these cases generally remain public unless a judge orders otherwise. This means that while a divorce case will appear on the public docket, the underlying pleadings may be restricted.
Adoption records are sealed, and even the existence of the case is not shown on public databases like Xchange. A petition to the court is required to access sealed adoption files.
Individuals who need to safeguard their contact information — particularly in protective order and stalking injunction cases — may request that their address, phone number, and email be withheld from the opposing party under Utah Code Section 78B-7-109(3).
Obtaining marriage and divorce records
Divorce decrees and other divorce filings must be requested from the Second District Court where the case was heard. Contact the Farmington location at (801) 447-3800 for records-related questions.
Marriage and divorce certificates (as distinct from court decrees) can be obtained through the Davis County Health Department for events occurring between 1978 and 2010. The fee is $18 per certificate. For events outside that range, marriage records should be requested from the Davis County Clerk’s office, and divorce records from the district court where the case was filed. The Utah Vital Records website also accepts online orders for marriage and divorce certificates statewide.
