Cache County is situated in northern Utah, with Logan as its county seat. The county’s court system operates through several judicial bodies: the First District Court (handling district-level matters for Cache County), the First District Juvenile Court, and a network of justice courts spread across local municipalities. Court records generated by these bodies document criminal prosecutions, civil lawsuits, family law proceedings, probate matters, and lower-level offenses adjudicated in justice courts. Understanding which court holds a particular record—and how to obtain it—is essential for attorneys, litigants, researchers, and members of the public who need access to case information.
Residents and other interested parties searching for court records in Utah can begin by consulting official judicial resources and local clerk offices. The Utah State Courts website provides statewide information on court locations, case search tools, rules governing records access, and self-help guides. Records may also be located through UtahCourts.us, county clerk offices, the Cache County Sheriff’s Office records unit, and public-access terminals available at most district court locations. The specific methods, fees, and restrictions applicable to Cache County records are detailed in the sections below.
How to Look Up a Court Case in Cache County?
There are several ways to locate a court case in Cache County, depending on whether the search is conducted online, in person, or by mail.
Online through Xchange
The primary electronic tool for searching district court and justice court case information is Xchange, maintained by the Utah Administrative Office of the Courts. Xchange draws from the Courts Information System (CORIS) and displays summary case data—including party names, assigned judges, attorneys of record, documents filed, hearings held, and judgments entered. Public documents filed electronically in district court cases since July 1, 2010, are available for purchase through the system.
Xchange offers three account types:
- Guest account — $10.00 initial fee; searches cost $0.35 each and documents $1.00 each. No account is created, and unused credits from the initial fee are forfeited.
- One-Time Use account — same pricing as guest, but an account is created so remaining credits can be used later.
- Monthly Subscription — $25.00 setup fee, then $40.00 per month, which includes 500 searches. Additional searches are $0.35 each. Documents remain $1.00 each. Subscription agreements must be emailed to xchange@utcourts.gov.
Xchange search tips and case type codes are available on the Utah Courts website. Dates when individual courts began using CORIS, which affects historical data availability, can be reviewed on the Xchange coverage page.
Online through CORE
Cache County operates the Cache Online Records Explorer (CORE), which provides access to certain county records, including some court-related documents. Users may register for a free account allowing up to 100 searches per day. A paid subscription offering unlimited searches and additional features is available for $80 per month or $960 per year.

Are Court Records Public in Cache County?
Most justice, district, and appellate court records in Utah are classified as public. Under Rule of Judicial Administration 4-202.02, anyone may inspect and copy public court records. The Utah Government Records Access and Management Act (GRAMA), Title 63G Chapter 2, separately governs access to government records more broadly, including records held by county offices. Together, these frameworks establish that court records are presumed open unless a specific classification restricts them.
Utah’s courts classify records into several tiers, each with different access rules:
Public records are open to anyone. They include most filings, judgments, and orders in criminal and civil cases. No special justification is needed to view or copy them.
Private records are accessible only to the parties in the case, their attorneys, and certain other authorized individuals. Examples include petitions for divorce, requests for protective orders, petitions for adult guardianship, motions to waive fees, victim impact statements, and medical records filed in a case. In cases involving a mixture of public and private documents—such as divorce, custody, conservatorship, or guardianship proceedings—the docket and court orders typically remain public while the underlying petitions and pleadings are private.
Sealed records restrict even the existence of the case from public view. Adoption records and expunged criminal records fall into this category. Accessing a sealed record requires a court order.
Protected records include attorney work product, records subject to attorney-client privilege, court security plans, and certain confidential business records. Rule 4-202.02(5) provides the full list.
Juvenile court records are not public. They are divided into social records and legal records, each with a distinct list of persons authorized to access them under Rule of Judicial Administration 4-202.03. Generally, access is limited to the subject (if 18 or older), parents or guardians of a minor subject, attorneys, persons with a notarized release, probation officers, and certain government agencies.
Additionally, specific pieces of personal identifying information—Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, bank account numbers, a child’s name and date of birth, and the address, phone, and email of a non-party—must be omitted or redacted from public filings. The responsibility for redaction falls on the person filing the document, not court staff. Rule 4-202.09(10) governs this requirement.
Cache County Criminal Court Records
Criminal cases in Cache County are divided between the First District Court and the various justice courts. Felony and Class A misdemeanor cases are filed exclusively in the First District Court. Most Class B and C misdemeanors, infractions, and traffic offenses are handled by justice courts within the municipality where the offense occurred.
Searching criminal case records
Criminal court records that have not been sealed, expunged, or otherwise restricted are public and can be searched through Xchange using a defendant’s name, case number, or other search criteria. The Xchange database includes both district court and justice court criminal cases.
In-person searches can be conducted at the First District Court in Logan or at the relevant justice court. The Cache County Sheriff’s Office also processes records requests related to criminal matters.
Obtaining a personal criminal history
Individuals seeking a copy of their own Utah criminal history may apply through the Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI). The process involves completing the Application for Criminal History form, having the four fingers of the right hand printed by a law enforcement agency on the application, and submitting the form along with the applicable fee. The application fee is $15.00, payable by check, money order, or cash (cash accepted in person only). Checks and money orders should be made payable to “Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification”.
Applications may be mailed to:
Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification

Alternatively, applicants may submit the Criminal History Record Application Form along with a photocopy of a valid government-issued ID by email to bcirightofaccess@utah.gov. If the record is to be sent to a third party, a completed Third-Party Release Form must accompany the application.

Cache County Civil Court Records
The First District Court handles general civil matters in Cache County, including contract disputes, debt collection, personal injury claims, and writs. Small claims cases are filed in justice courts, as all small claims have been directed to justice courts statewide since 2009.
Civil case records that are classified as public can be searched through Xchange by party name, case number, or other identifiers. Public documents filed electronically since July 1, 2010, may be purchased and downloaded through the system for $1.00 per document. Older records or records not yet digitized may need to be requested in person at the courthouse.
Typical contents of a civil case file include the plaintiff’s complaint and the relief sought, responsive pleadings, motions and supporting affidavits, exhibits, court orders, judgments, and any settlement agreements that have been filed with the court.
To request civil records in person, visit the clerk’s office at the First District Court:

Records may also be requested through the Cache County Sheriff’s Office records unit using the procedures described earlier.
The Cache County Recorder’s Office maintains separate property-related records—including deeds, mortgages, liens, and ownership plats—that may be relevant in civil litigation involving real property. These records are open for public inspection and can be searched through the CORE system or in person at:
Cache County Recorder’s Office
179 Main Street
Logan, UT 84321
Subscribers to Cache County Property Watch can receive notifications when a document is recorded against a specific parcel.
Cache County Family Court Records
Family law cases in Cache County—including divorce, child custody, child support, paternity, protective orders, and stalking injunctions—are adjudicated within the First District Court. Utah does not operate a separate family court; instead, the district court’s domestic relations docket handles these matters.
Accessing family court records
Because many family law filings are classified as private under Rule of Judicial Administration 4-202.02, public access to family court records is more limited than for most civil or criminal matters. Effective April 1, 2012, records in divorce, separate maintenance, grandparent visitation, temporary separation, adjudication of marriage, civil stalking, guardianship, conservatorship, cohabitant abuse, custody and support, UCCJEA, UIFSA, and paternity cases received enhanced privacy protections. In these case types, the docket and court orders generally remain public, but the petitions and other pleadings are private.
Parties to a family law case, their attorneys, and other authorized persons under Rule 4-202.03 may access the private documents. Searches for public portions of family case records can be conducted through Xchange.
Marriage records
The Cache County Clerk’s Office issues marriage licenses and maintains marriage records. Both applicants must appear together at the Clerk’s Office with valid photo identification. If either applicant was previously married, a copy of the divorce decree (or death certificate, if applicable) is required. Each applicant must also provide their parents’ full names, including mothers’ maiden names.
Cache County Clerk’s Office
179 North Main Street, Suite 102
Logan, UT 84321
Phone: (435) 755-1460
Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. (marriage license applications accepted until 4:30 p.m.)
Email: clerk@cachecounty.gov
The marriage license application process may be started online, though both applicants must complete it in person.
Marriage and divorce records are also available through the Utah Office of Vital Records and Statistics for events from 1978 to 2010. For marriages before 1978 or after 2010, the county clerk’s office where the marriage occurred is the appropriate source. The Utah Vital Records website provides online ordering and additional information.
Birth and death records
While not court records, birth and death certificates are frequently needed in family law proceedings. In Utah, birth records are private for 100 years from the date of birth, and death records are private for 75 years. During those periods, only the individual named on the record, immediate family, legal representatives, and legal guardians may obtain certified copies.
The local source for these records in Cache County is the Bear River Health Department:
Bear River Health Department — Vital Records
655 East 1300 North
Logan, UT 84341
Phone: (435) 792-6500
Email: vitalrecords@brhd.org
Current fees at the Bear River Health Department are $22 for a certified birth certificate and $30 for a certified death certificate, with each additional copy ordered at the same time costing $10. Requests may be made in person, by mail, or online through the department’s partnership with the Silver statewide database. Mail requests require a completed application, a photocopy of valid identification, proof of relationship, and payment by check or money order payable to Bear River Health Department.
Cache County Probate Court Records
Probate matters in Cache County, including estate administration, wills, trusts, conservatorships, and guardianships, are handled by the First District Court. Utah’s district courts exercise general jurisdiction over probate proceedings under the Uniform Probate Code.
Searching probate records
Public portions of probate case records can be located through Xchange using a party name or case number. However, some probate records contain private information. Guardianship and conservatorship petitions, for example, are classified as private under Rule 4-202.02, meaning only parties, their attorneys, interested persons entitled to notice under the Uniform Probate Code, and other authorized individuals may view them. Court orders, judgments, and letters of appointment in these cases remain public unless a judge orders otherwise.
Historical probate records, including those from the territorial period, may be held at the Utah Division of Archives and Records Service. The Division maintains digitized collections of probate court records from several Utah counties.
Requesting probate records in person
Individuals needing certified copies or access to probate case files may visit the clerk’s office at the First District Court during regular business hours. When requesting records, it is helpful to have the case number, the name of the decedent or ward, and the approximate year the proceeding was initiated.

The First District Juvenile Court, located in the same building as the district court at 135 North 100 West in Logan, handles delinquency, child welfare, and termination of parental rights cases. These records are not public and are not available through Xchange. Access is governed by Rule of Judicial Administration 4-202.03, which limits disclosure to specified individuals and agencies. The juvenile court can be reached at (435) 750-1300 (fax: (435) 750-1281).
